New booklet on the history of Jews in Dundalk
NOT much is known about the history of Jews in Dundalk, but will be rectified to an extent when a song about the 'Jews of Dundalk' will be launched on Thursday January 26th at 8pm in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Jocelyn Street.
The song has been composed by local singer/songwriter Jimmy Johnstone, who also wrote the ballad of George Casey.
There will be a programme for the launch that will include the display of Jewish religious items which have been discovered in Dundalk, while the Jew's harp will be played.
Reference will be made to the Hakenjos family in Dundalk, who were assumed to be Jews, but were recorded as Church of Ireland in the 1901 Census. Their headstone in St. Patrick's graveyard has been recently restored, and can be viewed there.
Stanley Millen willl chair the proceedings, and will have his booklet 'Jews, Germans and other refugees in Dundalk' available for sale on the night.
