Bruton supports Customs jobs
OPPOSITION leader, John Bruton visited Dundalk in January, 1992 to give his support to ensure that all possible steps be taken to retain as many of the 500 jobs in the customs clearance operations along the Border.
The jobs in the customs clearance agents were not expected to survive the advent of the open European market in January, 1993, and Dundalk with 210 people employed by agents mostly on the Newry Road would be hardest hit of all Border towns.
Mr. Bruton undertook to raise the matter in the Dail and to press the Minister for Finance to do what he could to retain the skills of the workers.
