DRIVING the new Citroen C3 on a fine, bright spring morning was an interesting experience - interesting because with the huge panoramic windscreen in front and above it was more like taking a trip in a lowflying helicopter. The visibility is amazing and just in case the sun gets too bright - some hope - there is a slide out panel in the roof that brings the screen to a more normal size.

AS spring arrives, 2010 has been dubbed the year of the pothole with motorists warned to brace themselves for a series of battered suspensions and blow-outs. According to a recent AA poll of 3,000 Motorists, 85% of drivers have hit a pot hole within the last month with many drivers reporting that they are dealing with broken road surfaces on a daily basis. Winter has left us with deep fractures in our roads as a reminder of the snow, ice and thaw that riddled the country. The great Irish pothole, once the biggest complaint about our roads in years gone by, is back with a vengeance. '2010 may be the year of the pothole,' says Director of Policy Conor Faughnan. The AA poll asked drivers when was the last time that they hit a pothole while driving in Ireland. Overall, 85% reported having done so within the last month. The figure was lowest in Dublin (79%) and highest in Munster (91%) in counties most directly affected by the bad weather, notably Cork (92.6%) and Tipperary (93%). Leinster (excluding Dublin) stood at 90 per cent. 'We got hundreds of detailed comments,' says Faughnan. 'Often it is just a bad road surface that locals get to know and be careful of. But it can be much more serious. A bad collision with a pothole can damage tyres and suspensions and could mean a costly repair, especially for those without comprehensive insurance.' The major road network came through winter relatively unscathed and the new motorways are fine. In total the primary road network is 5,500 kilometres long. That is just 6% of the total road network which has 97,000 kms (although it does carry 46% of all traffic). The secondary road network problem. In some extreme cases whole stretches of road need to be essentially reconstructed or have margin treatment. Many secondary roads are in fact very important local links and can make the difference between connection and isolation in rural areas. Water-filled potholes are a real hazard – AA Insurance staff have seen claims where the driver simply thought it was a puddle, or a deep pothole was concealed by a wet road or slush.
