20 local teachers will lose jobs
Over 20 post-primary teachers in Dundalk schools will lose their jobs as a result of the cuts in education announced by the Government in the budget. Local schools will also see their funding cut by € 350,000.
The extent of the cuts contained in the budget have been highlighted by the Post Primary Education Forum in Louth. The forum, set up in November 2007, brings together parents, management and teacher unions.
'Overall the picture is bleak,' says spokesperson Elaine Devlin. 'Our students, due to a serious cut in resources available, will suffer greatly.'
It is estimated that the equivalent of 23.5 teachers in Dundalk schools will lose their job, as well as three home school community liasion officers.
'This scheme has been very successful and provides supports for students who might be at risk of not completing their education.'
The allocation for support for special needs pupils is also being cut.
From a management point of view, the forum says: 'The logistics of dealing with cover for absent colleagues due to illness or school business are untenable.'
Sporting activities will also be affected with the ability to compete in interschools competitions seriously in doubt. And it comes at a time when there is growing concern about increasing rates of obesity among young people.
The forum is appealing to parents to support the protest against the cuts taking place in Dublin on Saturday.
