Dundalk man dies in Newry crash
THE TRAGIC death of a Dundalk man, after his car plunged into Newry canal last week, has led to calls for greater safety measures along the cross border Newry-Omeath Road.
Pat Mcardle ( 61) died on Wednesday last after his car left the road along an area known as the Fathom Line, near Victoria Lock, outside Newry, just before 2pm.
Mr. Mcardle is originally from Blackrock, but was living along the Omeath Road in Newry.
He moved to the northern town over thirty years ago, where he was a highly respected businessman, having run the popular Snaubs boutique and cafe in Monaghan Street.
The well known business is one of the longest established in Newry, and was run by Mr. Mcardle and his wife Blinnia.
A father of four, he also owned Nan Rice's pub in the centre of the city.
The accident happened on a section of the coastal route linking Newry to Omeath and Carlingford, where a number of fatalities have occurred, despite calls from locals for safety barriers to be erected along the canal bank.
Mr. Mcardle's funeral took place on Sunday last at the Church of the Most Holy Rosary, Brid-a-Chrinn.
