Priority for Louth dentists is looking after our dental health

Local dentists have lowered their fees in an effort to alleviate the impact on patients with cutbacks in dental cover. This follows a change in the PRSI scheme, and dentists warn worst is to follow for the less well off with funding of the medical card scheme to be pegged back to 2008 levels. They fear this will inevitably have adverse consequences for the unemployed and poorer sections of society, and result in poorer dental and oral health. There are an estimated 46,000 people in Louth who will be affected by the withdrawal of services paid through their PRSI. Capping the spend on medical cards at 2008 levels actually represents more than a 30% cut in funding to the medical card scheme when the 2009 expenditure and the number of current medical card holders is taken into account.
