Scuttling Narrow Water bridge project is short sighted: Adams

PROPOSAL IMPORTANT TO TOURISM INDUSTRY AND JOBS IN LOUTH

Wednesday July 27 2011

THE decision by the Fine Gael Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadker TD, not to proceed with the Narrow Water bridge project has been described as 'short sighted' by Sinn Féin Louth and East Meath TD Gerry Adams.

Mr. Adams said: 'For a Minister of Tourism to decide to abandon a project so obviously advantageous to tourism beggars belief and is evidence of a failure to grasp the importance of this project to tourism and jobs in the Louth area.

' The Narrow Water Bridge has significant economic potential for enhancing the tourism potential of the Louth/ South Down/and South Armagh areas.

'In the current economic crisis tourism is one of the few possible growth areas in the economy. Every effort needs to be made to exploit to their fullest potential the historic, cultural and natural resources available in this region.

'A significant amount of planning has already gone into the construction of a bridge at Narrow Water.

' Wasting all of that time and money and abandoning a project which can bring significant financial benefits to the region doesn't make sense.

' The last government gave the project the go ahead.

' The decision by Minister Varadker and his colleagues is short sighted and wrong,' said Deputy Adams.
