Dundalk cricket club goes into bat

Wednesday October 14 2009

FOLLOWING the great performance of the Irish team in the 2007 Cricket World Cup there has been a huge surge of interest in the sport all over the country, and the increased numbers of immigrants from cricket-playing countries has added to this interest.

Dundalk Crusaders Cricket Club went out of existence in the early 1990s, but some former members of the club discovered during the summer that a group of young immigrants were playing cricket on a very unsafe site in Dundalk and approached the County sport and recreation officer Noel Redmond.

He facilitated a meeting attended by Matt Sheridan, president of the Leinster Cricket Union, and development officer Briain O'Rourke. It was decided to form a club with members drawn from the immigrant community, ex Crusaders players and locals anxious to play cricket.

It was decided to form a committee with a view to drawing up a constitution, applying for membership of the Leinster Union and procuring proper playing facilities.

At a subsequent committee meeting the following officers were elected: Chairman, Gerry Murphy; Vice-chair, Jiwan Jadhani; Secretary, Derek Turner; Treasurers, Brian Morris and Brendan Waters; PRO Pat Kavanagh.

The club are now in the process of meeting schools and colleges in the area, hoping to introduce cricket to them and discuss developing a pitch.

An Open Day will be held in the Dundalk Sports Centre on Sunday November 22nd, giving people interested in cricket a chance to try their hand at the game.
