O'Hanlon passes Embassy exam with flying colours
IT'S been a very busy few days for the Dundalk Snooker League, the highlight being a thrilling Embassy Open Final 2012 between Stephen O'hanlon and Christy Cooney which attracted a packed house to the Embassy hall.
The players shared the opening two frames in the best-of-nine-decider, before O'hanlon edged 2-1 ahead following an extended safety exchange.
He then doubled his lead in the fourth frame and Cooney's prospects weren't looking too promising when some missed chances cost him the fifth, leaving O'hanlon one frame from victory.
However, Cooney fought back to take the next two, and after a great eighth frame he won that on the colours to force a final-frame decider.
The match was already two and a half hours old at this stage, so who would hold their nerve until the end?
Well, the final frame went all the way to the pink ball, and after some excellent safety play a half-chance of a pot presented itself to O'hanlon and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands to become Embassy Open champion 2012.
There was some consolation for Cooney subsequently as he was part of the Dundalk Snooker League team who defeated CYMS of Letterkenny 25-19 in their Wurth Challenge Cup clash.
Meanwhile, the Premier and First Division leagues continued over the past week.
